"One of the tragic impacts of the crisis has been that the middle income countries that had turned the corner are the ones hardest hit.  Across countries in the region, unemployment levels have risen while economic activities have collapsed. Poverty will rise. Families are being stretched to the limit."

Mr. Barbone will be presenting "The Crisis Hits Home - Stress-Testing Households in Europe and Central Asia" a recently published report by the World Bank.

Luca Barbone has been the Director for Economic Management and Poverty Reduction, Europe and Central Asia since 2007.  Since joining the World Bank in 1988 as an Economist in the Latin America and Caribbean Region, Mr. Barbone has held a number of positions in the Europe and Central Asia and in the Africa Departments.   Prior to his current position, he was the Director for Poverty Reduction, PREM Network, and Director for Ukraine, Moldova and Belarus at the World Bank.  Mr. Barbone has also worked for the Organisation for Cooperation and Development (Paris), the International Monetary Fund, the Planning Institute of Jamaica, and the Bank of Italy.  He has authored numerous articles in professional journals and books.  Mr Barbone received his Ph.D. in Economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
