Janusz Szyrmer – obituary

CASE – Center for Social and Economic Research bids farewell to Dr Janusz Szyrmer, who passed away on 25 December 2025, at the age of 75.

Janusz started cooperation with CASE in 1997 when he became the Director of the USAID-funded Ukraine Reform Program in Kyiv, implemented by the Harvard Institute of International Development, with CASE participation. Then he coordinated and worked as the senior expert/ researcher in several CASE and CASE Ukraine’s research and technical assistance projects in Ukraine and other countries of the former Soviet Union and Central and Eastern Europe. He was the author, coauthor, and scientific editor of numerous CASE and CASE Ukraine publications.
He was the Executive Director of CASE Ukraine in Kyiv (2000-2003), a member of its Supervisory Board (2003-2004), and the Chairman of the Supervisory Board (2009-2013).
From 2009 until his death, he was a CASE Fellow.

Apart from CASE, Janusz Szyrmer worked as a senior macroeconomic and fiscal policy expert in the USAID, ADB and UNDP-funded projects in Armenia, Azerbaijan, India,
Jordan, Kosovo, Kuwait, Laos, Maldives, Mongolia, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Tunisia, and Zambia.

Janusz graduated from the Poznan School of Economics and obtained a PhD degree in Regional Science/ Environmental Economics from the University of Pennsylvania. In the
1980s and 1990s, he was a Professor at the University of Pennsylvania. He was also a Visiting Professor at several universities in Europe, the US, and Latin America.
He was a good friend, ready to help everyone, especially young colleagues.

The funeral service will be held on 14 January 2026, 2:00 pm CET at the St. Charles
Borromeo Church in the Old Powazki Cemetery in Warsaw.
