Despite ongoing advancements in treatment and a gradual decline in cancer mortality rates, the disease continues to exact a significant human and economic toll, with marked geographical variations in outcomes.

An in-depth presentation of the most recent cancer mortality data at the NUTS-2 regional level, sourced from Eurostat, highlighting persistent inequalities in cancer outcomes across the EU.
An exploration of the factors contributing to these disparities, including variations in social conditions, healthcare infrastructure, and local governance capacities.
A compilation of 30 innovative practices implemented by regional authorities, demonstrating effective strategies in cancer prevention, early detection, and public engagement.
The establishment of a repository of best practices—referred to as a “cancer policy toolbox”—to serve as a practical resource for regional and national policymakers.
Alignment with the objectives of the EU’s Beating Cancer Plan, reinforcing the need for enhanced coordination, knowledge sharing, and public awareness campaigns across Member States.

The report underscores the urgent need for greater cooperation at the EU level and among regions, advocating for strengthened governance, improved personal cancer literacy, and the dissemination of proven policy interventions. It concludes with a set of actionable policy recommendations aimed at empowering regional decision-makers in the collective effort to reduce the cancer burden in Europe.
