How the EU should prepare for the enlargement in terms of governance, policies and investments: options and choices made from a territorial perspective
Since February 2022, the war in Ukraine has significantly reshaped the geopolitical landscape and exacerbated the multiple challenges and tensions in the Mediterranean region. The conflict has highlighted the vulnerability of traditional energy supply routes, and the need to reassess future energy development strategies in the Mediterranean region. Like the COVID-19 pandemic, geopolitical uncertainties transcend common borders and show just how interconnected the region is.
The objective of the study is to explore possible opportunities to further diversify the energy supply of the Mediterranean region. There will be a focus on the role that cities and regions play in accelerating the energy transition in the Mediterranean, providing local and regional authorities with practical ideas of how they can contribute, based on best practices from the region. The study will also explore possible ways in which cities and regions can work together across the region and opportunities to support the work of the UfM Energy Platforms (especially the UfM Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Platform). The ARLEM report based on this study will provide ARLEM members with policy recommendations on how they can become key drivers of the energy transition in their respective countries, how cities and regions can cooperate on energy matters in order to contribute to the diversification of the region’s energy supply and how they can play an active role in support of the UfM’s sixteen energy priority areas for the Mediterranean region.
