Dr Martyna Gliniecka is a Senior Social Sciences Researcher at the CASE - Center for Social and Economic Research. At CASE, she specialises in social research and policy projects, with a focus on qualitative research, participatory methods, and equality, diversity and inclusion. She previously led and participated in research projects in the Young and Resilient Research Centre at Western Sydney University, aiming to better young people’s lives and their resilience in the domains of technology and health. She specialises in qualitative research methods, participatory methodologies, and digital research (e.g., digital ethnography). She is especially interested in online communities and their role in the growing domain of youth digital health.

Martyna Gliniecka, a senior social sciences analyst, comments in an article for infor on a new report prepared by a panel of experts at the request of European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, focusing on children’s safety online.

The document is a response to increasingly frequent reports of children’s access to social media becoming more restricted. It is an attempt to establish a common European position.

First, a developmental approach is recommended: children under the age of 2 should have no access to screens or social media:

children between the ages of 3 and 12 should use the internet only under parental supervision or in educational contexts
teens aged 13–18 should have independent access to platforms, but only if they are designed with their well-being and developmental needs in mind.

Second, the EU shifts responsibility to the platforms rather than to parents and children:

it recommends more effective enforcement of the rules governing these platforms
it emphasizes the importance of the “safety by design” principle, which limits addictive mechanisms (e.g., infinite scroll, autoplay, or dark patterns)
