Jan Hagemejer, President of CASE, shared key findings from the report titled “The Impact of Tobacco Product Manufacturing on the Polish Economy” during a press conference at the PAP Press Center.

Poland continues to be the largest producer of tobacco products in the European Union. This significant scale of operations makes the sector a vital source of state revenue, contributing approximately 8% of total government income last year.

“In terms of raw tobacco production, Poland ranks third in the EU, following Italy and Spain. Around 3,500 farms in the country cultivate tobacco, employing approximately 20,000 people. When considering full-time equivalents, the tobacco sector and related industries account for 28,900 jobs. Furthermore, an estimated 560,000 people are indirectly connected to tobacco-related activities,” explained Jan Hagemejer.

However, the future growth of this sector faces uncertainty, primarily due to shifts in excise tax policies. This challenge is highlighted in the latest report prepared by CASE’s team of economists.

The Polish tobacco industry stands at a pivotal moment. The report outlines two potential scenarios for its development in the coming years. These projections will likely shape the strategic decisions of policymakers and industry leaders alike.
