Following the most recent CASE Studies seminar, an article by Dr. Jan Bazyli Klakla was published in Forum Akademickie, in which the Director for Migration, Social Policy, and Development Cooperation summarizes the discussion on think tanks and independent research organizations within the Polish science system.

The article addresses the following questions:

where independent research organizations come from
what their role is in the context of their position between science and public policy
how to maintain a team without stable funding
whether it is possible to pursue a research career outside of a university

The most important conclusion from the debate can be summed up simply: independent research organizations and think tanks are in no way seeking to lower standards. Rather, they are calling for standards of quality, credibility, and accountability to be designed in a way that also takes into account research conducted outside of universities and public institutions.
