Dr Martyna Gliniecka is a Senior Social Sciences Researcher at the CASE - Center for Social and Economic Research. At CASE, she specialises in social research and policy projects, with a focus on qualitative research, participatory methods, and equality, diversity and inclusion. She previously led and participated in research projects in the Young and Resilient Research Centre at Western Sydney University, aiming to better young people’s lives and their resilience in the domains of technology and health. She specialises in qualitative research methods, participatory methodologies, and digital research (e.g., digital ethnography). She is especially interested in online communities and their role in the growing domain of youth digital health.

Dr Martyna Gliniecka, Senior Social Sciences Researcher at CASE, provided commentary to the XYZ news portal on the effectiveness of restricting children’s and young people’s access to social media.

The CASE expert noted that age limits alone do not solve the problem of children’s online safety. The experience of Australia shows that young users continue to access platforms by circumventing the restrictions in place.

“If the digital environment is designed to maximise attention, engagement and profit, responsibility for its consequences must finally also be borne by those who design it,” Dr Martyna Gliniecka stressed.

In her comments, she also highlighted the need for greater accountability on the part of digital platforms and for supporting children in developing digital resilience—the skills required to use the internet consciously, safely and responsibly.
