  Andrzej Robaszewski, Director of Sustainable Development at CASE, shared his opinion in a debate on money.pl regarding tariffs on Chinese electric cars, in response to Piotr Arak's article.

“For the Polish economy, the tariff hike on imports of Chinese electric vehicles may bring more losses than benefits,” emphasizes Andrzej Robaszewski, Director for Fiscal Policy and Sustainable Development, noting that while the aim of the tariff policy is to protect the European automotive industry, its side effects will also impact Poland.

The expert points out that China has already begun retaliatory measures—restricting imports of European agri-food products, including milk and cheese, which could hit Polish exporters. At the same time, Chinese investments in Europe are starting to bypass countries that supported the new tariffs, potentially weakening Poland’s chances of attracting Chinese manufacturers.

The CASE expert also warns against excessive optimism regarding the tariff’s effects. Chinese producers, supported by subsidies and low production costs, may absorb the tariffs by reducing their margins instead of raising prices. As a result, cheap Chinese cars will likely continue to enter the European market, and Poland—as an economy focused on exporting components—stands to lose the most.
