Oskar Chmiel, in a conversation with Katarzyna Zalas-Kamińska in NOWagazeta, argues that helping other countries is not a gesture of goodwill, but an investment in our own security and future. Poland, though often compared to wealthier Western countries, is a wealthy and highly developed country globally, which means greater responsibility. Development cooperation, unlike ad hoc aid, is based on partnership and benefits both parties. As Oskar emphasizes, withdrawing such support risks exacerbating problems that will sooner or later affect us as well—from wars and humanitarian crises to climate change. Poland, which once benefited from aid itself, should now combine defense investments with efforts to promote peace and stability, because in the long term, these are the key factors in ensuring security and prosperity.

It is often better to solve problems in cooperation with other partners, even before they have fully developed, than by waiting until their consequences begin to affect our society.
