We warmly invite you to the thirteenth CASE Studies seminar, which will take place at midday on 24 June. The meeting will focus on the topic: ‘How can we teach collaboration and transdisciplinarity, and prepare students for the realities of research work? Findings from the METEOR project’.
The discussion on doctoral education is increasingly returning in Poland within the broader context of the debate on the reform of the science system: on the quality of doctorates, the role of doctoral schools, the working conditions of young researchers, but also on how to prepare for contemporary research work, which is increasingly rarely fully individual, but is increasingly carried out in project teams, consortia and in interaction with the social and economic environment. Against this backdrop, we wish to present the findings from the METEOR project (Methodologies for team working in eco-outwards research, funded under Horizon Europe), coordinated by CASE.
The discussion will be based on the findings of the analyses carried out as part of the project and on experiences gained from implementing specific development initiatives (including academies, international peer groups and online resources). The findings show that, despite institutional differences, doctoral education in Europe faces similar challenges: the tension between individual work and the expectations of teamwork, difficulties in collaborating across disciplinary boundaries, insufficient support for the development of cross-cutting competences, and limited preparation for diverse career paths (including those outside academia).
During the seminar, we will consider the following questions:
- what improvements can be made to doctoral training and the development of early-career researchers through better organisation of
- support at the start of a PhD programme,
- what are effective formats for group work and peer mentoring,
- how to ensure time is set aside for skills development,
- how project-based work practices should be taught

The meeting will provide an opportunity to discuss how to build a doctoral education system that, on the one hand, maintains high-quality research, and on the other, better responds to the realities of contemporary research work and the challenges facing science in Poland and Europe today.
