We cordially invite you to the 10th seminar in the CASE Studies series, which will take place on April 1 at noon and will be devoted to the topic of foster care, with particular emphasis on the potential challenges faced by people in the process of becoming independent.
The starting point for the discussion will be the report prepared by CASE, “The Cost of Lost Potential: An Economic Analysis of the Foster Care System,” commissioned by the FDI – Foundation for Good Initiatives. The key question posed in the publication is: can investments supporting foster care children – which undoubtedly bring social and health benefits – also pay off from a purely economic point of view?
The authors argue that this is possible with the potentially achievable effectiveness of reforms, especially when their impact is viewed from a broader perspective. Improving the conditions for entering adulthood promotes the fuller use of young people’s potential, manifested, among other things, in higher future productivity and greater professional activity, which in turn leads to a long-term increase in added value in the economy.
During the seminar, we will discuss the following issues, among others:
- What does the current foster care support system look like? In particular, what financial benefits can people leaving foster care count on, and to what extent do these benefits cover the costs of independent living?
- What do we know from previous studies about the economic situation of former foster care residents?
- What are the estimated costs of the proposed reforms: both those prepared by the Ministry and those recommended by the FDI—and can they be recouped in economic terms?
- What losses does the economy incur when young adults do not receive sufficient support and, as a result, cannot fully realize their potential?
The meeting will be attended by:
- Prof. Maria Kolankiewicz, University of Warsaw;
- Dr. Joanna Wardzała, University of Wrocław;
- Dr. Aleksandra Perchla-Włosik, University of Wrocław;
- Aleksandra Kolasa, Senior Economist at CASE, co-author of the report
The meeting will be moderated by Agnieszka Maj (CASE).
The seminar will be recorded and the recording will be published on the CASE YouTube channel.
