About the seminar:
On 25 June 2024, the European Union officially opened accession negotiations with Ukraine. The accession process is likely to take several years, and Ukraine’s entry into European structures will require the fulfilment of all convergence criteria and the agreement of all member states. It will be preceded not only by a difficult political dialogue, but also by Ukraine’s economic preparation for membership. In this process, agriculture seems to be a particularly sensitive area – for both sides of the negotiations.
One of the main challenges will be the integration of the Ukrainian agricultural sector into the European single market. A discussion on this topic between Ukrainian and Polish experts is the aim of the 183rd mBank-CASE seminar.
The development of Ukrainian agriculture – during and after the accession process – must not be at the expense of the development of agriculture in the EU – is the dominant narrative in the discussions of agricultural experts. Sustainability, development and mutual benefit must be taken into account. Trade liberalisation with Ukraine must be accompanied by changes in the country’s agricultural production standards. It will be crucial to avoid excessive competition that could harm European farmers, including those in Poland. The development of agriculture in Ukraine should be based on synergy, with both sides benefiting from the exchange of experience, technology and scientific cooperation.
During the seminar, Polish and Ukrainian experts will discuss how Polish and Ukrainian agriculture can and should develop in the coming years, during Ukraine’s accession process:
• To provide good prospects for the agricultural sectors of both countries,
And
• What role the CAP can play in this process and how it should change.
