Study on Quality of Public Finances in Support of Growth in the Mediterranean Partner Countries of the EU

In the EU, the quality of public finances has emerged in recent years as a focal point for policy makers and researchers. In particular, the link between the quality of public finances and economic growth has been of interest to the European Commission.
In order to investigate the challenges in this field for the EU partners in the Mediterranean region, a CASE team of researchers has been selected by the DG ECFIN to lead a study.
The study encompassed a survey on the literature on "fiscal policy for growth" from the point of view of its relevance for the EU's Mediterranean partner countries. Second, the study looked in more detail into those aspects of the quality of public finances in the Mediterranean partner countries that pose the biggest constraints on growth. Finally, the report provided the EC with policy recommendations and proposals for further research.
