1940–2026
It is with great sadness that we received the news of the passing of Professor Stanisław Gomułka.
Following Poland’s political transformation, he returned from the United Kingdom, where he had already established himself as a distinguished economist at the London School of Economics, to contribute to the design of Poland’s macroeconomic stabilisation programme and its landmark economic reforms. He played a highly influential advisory role in these efforts, particularly during the years 1989–1991.
During the 1990s, Professor Gomułka worked closely with CASE, contributing his expertise and sharp analytical mind to projects implemented by the CASE Foundation in post-Soviet countries. His work resulted in valuable analyses and important policy recommendations, which have been preserved in the CASE online archive.
We were fortunate to continue benefiting from his expertise and commitment in the decades that followed, although less frequently due to his work in the corporate sector. In 2019, he readily accepted our invitation to contribute a chapter to Our Europe: 15 Years of Poland in the European Union, a report that made an important contribution to the public debate on the significance of Poland’s membership in the European Union.
From time to time, he also accepted invitations to participate in the BRE Bank (later mBank–CASE) seminar series. As the organiser and moderator of these seminars, I greatly valued his presence, as it invariably ensured discussions of the highest intellectual and substantive quality.
Staszek was an outstanding economist, an insightful discussant, a patriot, and a remarkable person.
We bid him farewell with deep sorrow.
