About the seminar:
The globalised world and international institutions that underpin it are facing unprecedented stress. The pandemic of COVID-19 and the related economic downturn, as well as the increasingly aggressive posture of China, are bringing economic nationalism, protectionism, and isolationism into the forefront of debates in Western democracies, threatening to throw the world into a geopolitical and economic catastrophe.
The risk is compounded by the recent marriage of convenience of political conservatives and classical liberals with nationalists. It is urgent to revive an alternative, cosmopolitan and internationalist tradition, which has been long dormant on the political right and update it to the realities of the 21st century. “Globalism” and international cooperation are not top-down impositions of unaccountable elites but are essential to the preservation of economic prosperity and addressing policy challenges that transcend national borders. Instead for cheering for their destruction, christian democrats, conservatives and classical liberals have to defend the central institutional achievements of the post-WWII international order, starting with the European Union.
Dr. Dalibor Rohac is a resident scholar at the American Enterprise Institute, where he studies political economy of the European Union; research associate at the Wilfried Martens Centre for European Studies in Brussels; contributing editor at “The American Interest” magazine; and author of In Defense of Globalism. His previous book, Towards an Imperfect Union: A Conservative Case for the EU, was included on Foreign Affairs magazine’s list of best books of 2016. Rohac has written about European affairs for The Washington Post, The New York Times, Financial Times, The Wall Street Journal, Foreign Affairs, and other outlets and has appeared on news outlets including BBC, Bloomberg Television, Fox News, and Fox Business. He holds aPh.D. in political economy from King’s College London.
Prof. Roman Kuźniar - graduated from the Faculty of Journalism and Political Sciences of the University of Warsaw (1977). Ph.D in political science (1981). D. Sc. (1990). University of Warsaw Professor (1992). Titular Professor (2000). Has been working at the University of Warsaw Institute of International Relations since 1977. Between 1984 – 1986 he was the vice director of the Institute. Since 1992 he has been heading the Department of Strategic Studies and International Security. Editor in Chief of the „Rocznik Strategiczny” magazine. Director of the Polish Institute of International Affairs (2005 – February 2007). Director of the Department for Planning and Analysis (1992-1994 and 2000-2002) at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. During 2007 – 2010, he was an advisor to the Defence Minister, and between 2010 – 2015, served as an advisor to the President of the Republic of Poland on foreign policy. Member of the University of Warsaw Senate (2012 – 2020).
