Beyond Signposting. New Approach to Working with Families of Radicalised Youth and Cooperating with National Authorities

Expanding instability in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region, continues to pose significant security challenges to international security forces. An estimated 27,000-31,000 foreign fighters have joined terrorist groups such as Daesh or Al-Qaeda affiliates and a significant number of them are reported to have returned to their home countries. The need for effective prevention and de-radicalisation programmes cannot therefore be overestimated. In what follows, this policy brief examines experiences of two counselling community-based organisations (CBOs) providing advice and support to relatives and friends of young people affected by radicalisation: Families for Life and Hayat Canada. Based on those, recommendations for improvements in their work, especially in terms of cooperation with various authorities, are offered as well.
